CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Betty wasn’t lying when she said that she would take care of it. She had someone for everything—my hair, my makeup, my clothing, and yes, even someone to bath me and lather me with oil. I’ll admit I fought hard. It’s unnatural to have someone else touching your goods only for hygienic purposes. I can wash myself!

But, as it turns out, that wasn’t the worst part. She came at me with a hot bowl of wax and a stick. I thought about arguing with her, but once I saw the determination on her face, my objections faded…hair being ripped from my body was the lesser of two evils.

What the heck? I’m going to kill Betty when I’m through with this torture.

After what seems to be hours, all of the ladies have gone. I’m finally alone now and a bit eager to see the final result. If pain equals beauty then I should be one hot mess.

Looking in the full-length mirror, I can’t believe the woman staring back at me. I look beautiful. For a second I thought they would make me look like how Duchesses looked years ago with their beehive hair and ringlets. But, thankfully, they kept things modern looking, in a classic way of course.

You dream of this as a little girl—a Princess with her Prince. The gowns, the castle, the respect…But, I’m not a Princess and he really isn’t a Prince…just damn near close to being one. And I’m here on business.

The dress is a pretty shade of candy-red satin. It’s long and splits at my thigh, showing off my bare, silken legs whenever I walk. The gardening I’ve been doing has given me a nice tan.

I wonder if this really is appropriate for such an occasion. Somehow I don’t think so.

Underneath, I’m wearing a sexy black corset that promises to make it difficult for me to breathe.

The shoes are to die for. They look like they cost just about as much as the dress, if not more. They are the same shade of red. They come up to wrap around my ankles elongating my already long legs. The length of my heels no doubt will be making my feet go numb later. But I look so glamorous and tall I don’t even care.

They left my hair down in soft waves and my makeup is kept to a classic look. I wonder what the other women will be wearing; hopefully I won’t be too out of place.

Tap, tap! His knock at my bedroom door is shallow and hurried…impatient as if he’s been knocking for a long time.

Crap! Maybe he has.

I turn around so fast that I have to grab hold of the nearest item available, which happens to be the coat rack, in order to keep from falling on my face and splitting the dress even further.

“One second.”

God, this night has barely begun and I’m already failing miserably.

I clumsily totter up to the door and open it. I’m not used to dressing like a woman and my gait testifies to that fact.
